As a truck driver, many days consist of long hours on the road. These long hours pose potential dangers that can put lives at risk.

Many accidents and injuries can be prevented by following certain safety procedures. There are some simple things that drivers can do every day to ensure their own safety, as well as the safety of other drivers on the road.

Here are a few safety tips for truck drivers:

Be Aware Of Weather Conditions

Weather conditions are a big factor in the way truckers should be driving. The weather can affect road conditions, visibility, and traffic. Excessive driving speeds in unsafe weather and road conditions are a major cause of fatal crashes on the road.

If a driver is going through wet roads, their speed should be reduced by a third. If the road is packed with snow, their speed should be reduced by half. Slick, icy roads should be driven on slowly and cautiously. The braking distance can be greatly affected by road surfaces and weather conditions such as rain, ice, and snow, or debris.  If the driver can no longer safely control the vehicle, they should pull over and wait for conditions to improve.

Get Enough Sleep

With many hours of transportation and strenuous work activities, driver fatigue is a common problem. The Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) reported that 13 percent of commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers were considered to have been fatigued at the time of their crash. If you do become drowsy while driving, be sure to choose a safe place to pull over and rest.

Driver alertness could be related to time of day, rather than time on task. Most drivers are less alert at night. Drowsiness can be even more enhanced when drivers are on the road for an extended period of time. It is unsafe for a driver to be on the road if they experience frequent yawning, heavy eyes, or blurred vision. Drivers should make sure they get enough rest before taking on a long trip.

Maintain A Safe Following Distance

Because large trucks need additional space between vehicles to allow for safe braking and unexpected actions, it is important for drivers to maintain a safe following distance. During an accident, large trucks most often hit the vehicle in front of them.

Along with providing enough stopping time, proper following distance allows for more time to make well-planned decisions and provides drivers the opportunity to scan the sides, look far enough ahead, and view the vehicle immediately in front.

If you are driving below 40 mph, you should leave at least one second for every 10 feet of vehicle length. For speeds over 40 mph, you should leave one additional second.
